About Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison

Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison ("Paul, Weiss") is a New York headquartered corporate law specialist. The firm has rapidly established itself as a household name in the City law scene, and for good reason. It offers a unique proposition to junior talent insofar as it combines an already elite private equity practice with the potential for rapid career advancement. Any account of Paul, Weiss's London appeal has to start with private equity. The firm’s US approach has always been angled towards private equity sponsors, so it made sense for a similar focus when a decision was made in mid-2023 to start pushing for expansion across the pond. What was far more difficult to anticipate was the pace of that expansion. Over the course of the next two years Paul, Weiss London acquired: Neel Sachdev (a debt finance king), Chris Sullivan (a private equity M&A don), Nicole Kar (leading private-equity competition specialist), and 30 other London-based partners. The results were impossible to ignore. Paul, Weiss London has rapidly risen to the ranks of the elite private equity advisors in the City. Interestingly, the firm has developed an expertise which extends beyond ‘pure’ private equity work. Specifically, the firm has already cultivated star teams in traditional private equity support areas. A great example of this is the Nicole Kar and team. Kar is an expert in two facets of competition law which make her a tremendous asset to private equity sponsors. First, she is among the leading experts in securing merger approval (with over 40 successful applications to date). This has obvious implications for private equity firms seeking growth in their portfolios through mergers. Second, she has a healthy practice in advising sponsors on the potential penalties from competition enforcement against their portfolio companies. The upshot is that Paul, Weiss is able to advise its key private equity clients not just on the transaction per se, but on a range of common ancillary regulatory concerns. But the firm’s private equity dominance has yet further significance for potential joiners. Specifically, Paul Weiss’s aggressive London strategy has created the opportunity for entrepreneurial young lawyers to accelerate their own development quicker than almost anywhere else. This potential for rapid growth trajectories has been supported by explicit structural shifts in the firm’s approach to culture and training. This is seen most clearly when examining the firm’s new London Training Contract pipeline. The firm has only very recently taken on trainees and senior leadership (including Neel Sachdev himself) have expressed their desire to accelerate them as quickly as possible. This is supported by the structural decision to begin expanding the range of practice areas on offer. For instance, in early summer of 2025, the firm announced that it would be premiering a litigation offering. Trainees therefore, have the potential to be at the epicentre of the development of new competencies for the London office. Paul, Weiss has quickly built a major player at the pointy end of London’s corporate law scene. It has distinguished itself by the star-power it has acquired, and the pace of said acquisitions. In terms of juniors, this strategic focus on speed and entrepreneurship has created a rare opportunity for the right talent to rapidly find their feet.
